Searcy's Crime TrendsThe Arkansas Crime Information Center tracks the number of serious crimes that are reported in Arkansas using the crime index to figure the crime rate. Arkansas has experienced a slow but steady increase in the state crime index since 1992. However, Searcy has experienced an overall decrease in the crime rate of 13.6% over the last 5 years. The crime index for Searcy was 880 in 1994 for a crime rate of 5,255 per 100,000 people, increasing to 948 in 1995 before beginning to decrease. It had dropped to 794 by 1997 for a crime rate of 4,272 per 100,000 population and has continued into 1998. During this time Searcy's population has increased from just over 16,000 in 1994 to an estimated population of well over 20,000 today. There are several factors that show why Searcy has lowered its crime rate by 13.6% while the majority of the state had an increase. Searcy is one of the fastest growing communities in Arkansas. In response to this growth, in 1994 the community approved a sales tax initiative that was targeted in part to increasing and improving public safety in Searcy. As a result of this initiative the authorized strength of the police department was increased by 10 officers. This has resulted in some criminal element displacement, that is, some Searcy criminals have moved their criminal activity to other smaller communities that are less prepared and budgeted to detect and apprehend criminals. Searcy is a family oriented community that has a large religious base which is reflected in the way the community has supported its police department. This has resulted in a higher community standard for the conduct of its citizens. Its citizens are on the average highly educated, with Harding University calling Searcy home.
